Frank woke with a shudder, shaking his already flimsy motel room bed. The morning sun peeked through his partially drawn drapes. The pain in his spine throbbed in unison with every heartbeat. Placing his feet on the floor, he arched his back, hoping for some relief. There wasn’t any.

The medication was on the dresser just a few feet away, but it might as well have been miles. His head swirling and his back on fire, he stood using the wall to balance himself. He grunted and doubled over, still trying to ease the pain, which bordered on unbearable.

“Lord help me,” he whispered as he righted himself. Hands still on the wall, he tottered and wobbled his way to the dresser.

Hunched over, his gnarled hands fought with the pill bottle as he hurried to get the pills that might give him temporary comfort. The lid popped open, and the bottle fell from his hands, spilling the pills onto the dirty brown carpet.

Frank bent down to pick them up when a searing pain pierced his back. He stood, taking in small sips of air. Sweat gushed from his brow. Not yet, Lord. Please, I haven’t finished what I come to do.

He shuffled toward the phone next to his bed. He stopped, trying to focus on the phone. Everything blurred to just a pinprick of light, then complete darkness.

He felt nothing as he crashed to the floor.
